This response action involves rail infrastructure providers running competitions (voted with an arts-panel, and/or public votes) or annual programmes where independent local artists and designers are invited to paint or add use to the area. This kind of competitions would help to:
- ensure safety of those making temporary artistic works in rail environments
- dramatically improve the quality of engineering-led rail environments both for rail passengers and other publics who may be able to see some of the chosen sites (such as bridges)
- provide financially and newsworthy valuable opportunities for rail providers/operators to boost CSR and Public Relations of the operators involved.
- add memorable and distinct USP's for routes where works are installed - passengers would more likely enjoy their journey and recommend to others
- help open up conversation with illegal graffiti writers and give them a chance to contribute
